Transparent, accountable, and owned by the community.
Community Kashrut is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. We operate under a three-part governance model that ensures transparency, community ownership, and halachic authority.
Community Kashrut has two members: the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies and the Council of Orthodox Synagogues NSW (COS NSW). These organisations represent the broader NSW Jewish community and collectively appoint our lay board. This structure ensures that no single individual or entity can control CK — governance authority rests with accountable community institutions.
Our board is entirely volunteer. No director is paid. Board members are appointed by the JBD and COS NSW, and they are responsible for the financial and administrative running of Community Kashrut: budgets, policies, employment, and organisational direction.
The board's role is to ensure CK operates effectively, sustainably, and transparently. Individual board members are listed in our public ACNC register.
Halachic decisions — what is and is not kosher, supervision standards, certification criteria — are the sole responsibility of our Vaad HaRabonim. This group of rabbinic authorities operates completely separately from the lay board's financial and administrative functions. This separation ensures that kashrut standards are determined solely by recognised halachic expertise, not by business or financial considerations.
Community Kashrut is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Our financial statements, governance structure, and board members are publicly available through the ACNC register. We follow corporate governance guidelines published by the JCA.
